Denis Kitchen was one of the original “underground” cartoonists in the late 60s, and the Founder/Publisher of Kitchen Sink Press (1969-99). In 1986 he founded the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and chaired for 18 years. He represents numerous artists and estates. He’s co-written biographies on cartoonists Al Capp (Bloomsbury), Harvey Kurtzman (Abrams), Harrison Cady (Beehive) and Underground Classics (Abrams). Books about him include "The Oddly Compelling Art of Denis Kitchen" (Dark Horse), "Kitchen Sink: The 1st 25 Years" (David Schreiner), and "Everything Including the Kitchen Sink" (Jon B. Cooke). He curates exhibits of comic art in the US & Europe. Kitchen was a first ballot inductee into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame, received a Life Achievement Award from the Museum of Wisconsin Art, has had several one-man exhibits, and is the subject of an upcoming documentary film, "Oddly Compelling." In December 2024 he’ll receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. He is also reputed to be part of the secretive Bushmiller Society.
